Sirkeci Liman Han Istanbul Restoration

Sirkeci Liman Han Istanbul Restoration

The Sirkeci Liman Han Istanbul restoration involved Iznik Mavi Cini in the renewal of tile surfaces on both the interior and exterior façades of the building. Located in Eminönü, the project focused on preserving the architectural integrity of this historic structure. Tiles produced in different dimensions and patterns were evaluated to ensure consistency with the existing façades.

Liman Han, located in Istanbul’s Eminönü district, is one of the notable buildings designed by Vedat Tek, who served as chief court architect during the Ottoman period. Over time, structural issues developed in the building’s foundation, placing the structure at risk and making a comprehensive restoration process necessary.

With restoration works initiated in 2021, the building’s foundation was reinforced, and the tile surfaces on both the interior and exterior façades were renewed in accordance with the original applications. Within this scope, Iznik Mavi Cini produced a total of 22,964 Iznik tiles (traditional ceramic tiles produced in the Iznik tradition) in varying dimensions and patterns. The production process was completed within an approximately five-month period.

Following the restoration, Liman Han began serving as an education and research center. The approach adopted throughout the project prioritized the preservation of the building’s original façade layout and tile character. All applications were carried out with attention to maintaining coherence with the existing architectural fabric.

“Façade tiles in historic buildings are an integral component of architectural identity, and this unity must be preserved during restoration.”
