Rüstem Pasha Mosque Restoration, Istanbul

As part of the Rustem Pasha Mosque Istanbul restoration, Iznik Mavi Cini undertook the reproduction of tiles used on the mosque’s exterior walls. The work carried out on this structure designed by Mimar Sinan focused on preserving the original tile continuity of the mosque. All reproduced tiles were handled in accordance with the existing architectural composition.

The Rustem Pasha Mosque was commissioned in the name of Rustem Pasha, the spouse of Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and was designed by Mimar Sinan. The mosque is characterized by the extensive use of Iznik tiles across a wide range of surfaces, from wall panels to areas beneath the dome cornices, forming a defining element of its architectural identity.

Within the scope of the restoration carried out in 2020, a total of 133 Iznik tiles were reproduced by Iznik Mavi Cini for use on the mosque’s exterior walls. During production, compatibility with the existing tile surfaces and the overall façade composition was taken as the primary reference.

This restoration aimed to maintain the continuity of the mosque’s original tile language while preserving its architectural character. The reproduced tiles were evaluated in direct relation to the existing surfaces, and the restoration process was carried out with respect for the structure’s historical fabric.

“ In structures such as the Rustem Pasha Mosque, tiles are not decorative elements but an integral part of the architecture.”
