Narmanlı Han Restoration, Istanbul

As part of the Narmanlı Han Istanbul restoration project, Iznik Mavi Cini undertook the renewal of an Iznik tile panel located within the building, reproducing it in accordance with its original form. The work carried out at this historic structure in Beyoğlu Tünel Square focused on preserving the existing tile surface and maintaining its original appearance. The restoration was executed in a workshop setting in collaboration with Anikya.

Located at Tünel Square in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district, Narmanlı Han was constructed in the 19th century and has held a distinctive place in the city’s cultural life over time. The building has served various functions across different periods and became particularly associated with its long-term use as studios and living spaces for artists. This layered history required careful consideration of every element addressed during the restoration process.

Within the scope of the restoration carried out in 2016, a single Iznik tile panel located inside the han was renewed. The work was conducted through a collaboration between Iznik Mavi Cini and Anikya, with the panel reproduced in a workshop environment in line with its original characteristics. Throughout the production process, the existing pattern arrangement and surface character were taken as the primary references.

This intervention focused on preserving the original identity of the tile element within Narmanlı Han’s interior. The renewed panel was evaluated within the building’s historical and cultural context, and the restoration process was completed in alignment with the multilayered heritage the han carries from past to present.

“In historic buildings, even the correct handling of a single tile panel is significant for preserving the structure’s overall memory.”
