Al-Masjid an-Nabawi Restoration, Medina (Mescid-i Nebevi)

As part of the Al-Masjid an-Nabawi restoration project, Iznik Mavi Cini reproduced the Iznik tiles used in this sacred structure located in Medina and provided technical contribution to the restoration process. During the works carried out between 2019 and 2020, classical kalem işi applications were implemented together with the underglaze decoration technique. The project represents a comprehensive restoration process focused on preserving traditional tile production knowledge within one of the most significant structures of Islamic architecture.

Within the scope of the Al-Masjid an-Nabawi restoration, Iznik Mavi Cini produced a total of 462 Iznik tiles in sizes of 25×25 cm, 8×25 cm, 10×25 cm, and 12×25 cm. During production, kalem işi applications were integrated with the underglaze decoration technique, differing from classical painting methods. This approach formed the basis of a restoration methodology aimed at preserving the original tile character of the structure.

Discussions initiated in June 2019 with an Egyptian restoration firm progressed through sample production, on-site examinations in Medina, and technical evaluations. Body, slip, pigment, and glaze components were prepared with direct reference to existing original examples. The production process was completed by March 2020. All tiles were manufactured in accordance with traditional Iznik tile production techniques and applied within the restoration area.

“During restoration works carried out in sacred structures such as Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, preserving historical context is as critical as technical accuracy. Addressing kalem işi applications together with the underglaze decoration technique constituted one of the most sensitive stages of this project.”
