The Galata Istanbul Hotel Iznik Tile Project

The Galata Istanbul Hotel Iznik Tile Project

Developed for The Galata Istanbul Hotel – MGallery, this distinctive Iznik tile application reinterprets the traditional art of Iznik tiles through a contemporary spatial approach. The miniature Iznik tile panels produced by Iznik Mavi Cini were incorporated into the hotel’s hammam and courtyard areas, adding an artistic layer to the architectural composition. The project stands out as a refined interior design application that brings together historical references and the modern hotel experience.

The project carried out for The Galata Istanbul Hotel – MGallery is a distinctive interior design application in which the art of Iznik tiles is treated not merely as a decorative element, but as an integral part of the spatial composition. Three miniature Iznik tile panels positioned within the hotel’s hammam were designed in dimensions of 90 × 120 cm, 120 × 170 cm, and 175 × 175 cm, and carefully integrated according to the scale of the space. The panels stand out through their rich patterns, vibrant color palette, and highly detailed compositions.

Unlike conventional hammam tile arrangements, these Iznik tile panels were approached with a freer and more contemporary design language, bringing a fresh and refined interpretation to the space. While preserving the traditional visual language of Iznik tiles, the pattern compositions and surface placements were developed in harmony with modern interior architecture.

The project extended beyond the hammam itself. The hotel courtyard and the area above the doorway connecting the hammam to the street were also enriched with Iznik tile applications. This approach created visual continuity across different spatial layers of the building, allowing the art of Iznik tiles to become an architectural narrative element that connects interior and exterior spaces.

“In this project, we approached Iznik tile not as an ornamental element that references the past, but as a contemporary surface language that strengthens the identity of the space.”
— Iznik Mavi Cini, Senior Architectural Projects Production Facility Manager
In which areas of the hotel were the Iznik tile panels used in this project?
The Iznik tile panels were positioned within the hotel’s hammam as focal elements of the space. Additional Iznik tile applications were also incorporated into the courtyard and above the doorway connecting the hammam to the street.

Why was the miniature style chosen for the hammam panels?
The miniature style creates an engaging visual experience by drawing viewers closer to the surface through its richness of detail. In experiential spaces such as a hammam, this approach plays an important role in enhancing spatial perception.

How does this Iznik tile application differ from traditional hammam tile designs?
Traditional hammam tiles often rely on repetitive decorative patterns. In this project, however, freer compositions and more contemporary pattern arrangements were preferred, bringing a modern interpretation to the space while maintaining a connection to the Iznik tile tradition.

How can the role of Iznik tile art in hotel architecture be defined?
In hotel architecture, Iznik tile art functions as a surface language that helps establish identity and strengthen the narrative of a space. When applied at the appropriate scale and within the right context, it becomes a lasting design element that enriches the overall spatial experience.
