This special Iznik tile panel, located at the entrance of the Iznik Archaeology Museum, which opened in 2022, makes the city’s multilayered history visible through an architectural surface language. Produced by Iznik Mavi Cini, the panel was designed as a monumental focal point welcoming visitors at the museum entrance and presents Iznik’s cultural heritage through a contemporary composition.

The Iznik tile panel positioned at the entrance of the Iznik Archaeology Museum was approached as a surface application that strengthens the public identity of the museum building. Measuring 235 × 300 cm, the panel functions as an architectural threshold that defines the visitor’s first visual contact with the museum. The main theme of the composition is the olive tree, which holds an important place in Iznik’s historical and cultural memory. Representing continuity and rootedness, the olive tree is placed at the center of the design.

At the roots of the tree, peacock and water of life motifs are used, referencing the archaeological layers of Iznik’s early Christian period. These elements express the world of belief and symbolism extending to the city’s ancient and late antique periods through a surface language. The meander pattern used in the border of the panel adds rhythm and continuity to the composition as a geometric decorative element frequently seen in Roman art.

Designed by Serap Ereyli, this Iznik tile panel brings together symbols from different periods on a single surface, transforming Iznik’s multilayered history into a unified narrative. In this project, Iznik tile is treated not merely as a decorative element, but as a permanent narrative medium that conveys the historical content of the museum on an architectural level.
