Izmir Economic Congress Center Iznik Tile Panel

The monumental Iznik tile panel located at the entrance of the Izmir Economic Congress Center presents a powerful narrative symbolizing the founding process of the Republic of Türkiye. Produced by Iznik Mavi Cini, this large-scale panel interprets the War of Independence and the birth of the Republic through the language of miniature painting, creating a lasting space of memory within the public realm. Bringing together historical narrative and traditional Iznik tile art, the work stands as an important architectural element that reinforces the representative power of the building.

The Izmir Economic Congress Center is a venue conceived with reference to the Izmir Economic Congress, which shaped Türkiye’s economic history, aiming to represent this historical legacy within a contemporary architectural structure. Created through the faithful reconstruction of the historic Banka-Han building, the center features a monumental Iznik tile panel placed along the entrance axis, designed to make the historical identity of the space visible.

Produced by Iznik Mavi Cini and measuring 2.4 × 20 meters, this panel depicts Türkiye’s struggle for independence and the achievements of the Republic through the language of miniature painting. On the left side of the composition, Turkish soldiers who fought on different fronts during the First World War are presented within a symbolic narrative through the figure of a seven-headed dragon, while the Phoenix on the right side represents rebirth from the ashes and reconstruction.

The panel was conceived not merely as a decorative surface, but as a monumental Iznik tile application integrated with the space and carrying a historical narrative within the public realm. Traditional Iznik tile aesthetics were reinterpreted within a contemporary architectural context, transforming the entrance of the building into a powerful welcoming space.

“This panel transforms the historical turning point represented by the Izmir Economic Congress into a spatial narrative, creating a lasting element of memory at the entrance of the building.”
— Iznik Mavi Cini, Senior Architectural Projects Production Facility Manager
