Uskudar Metro Station Iznik Tile Panel

Uskudar Metro Station Iznik Tile Panel

In this project, carried out in collaboration with Anikya for Uskudar Metro Station, the miniature-style Iznik tile panel was produced by Iznik Mavi Cini. Positioned within the public-use area of the metro station, this large-scale panel was approached as an architectural surface that integrates traditional Iznik tile art into the daily flow of modern urban life.

The Iznik tile panel located at Uskudar Metro Station was designed as a surface application that aims to make cultural heritage visible within public spaces. Within the scope of the project carried out in collaboration with Anikya, the miniature-style composition was developed in harmony with the intense usage rhythm of the metro station.

The panel creates a narrative that is perceived together with passenger movement through its surface composition extending along a long axis. While the miniature style draws viewers closer to the surface through its detailed narrative language, the characteristic colors and patterns of Iznik tile art give the space a strong visual identity. This approach transforms the tile from a merely decorative element into an integral part of the architectural surface.

Such applications in public transportation spaces offer opportunities to encounter art within the daily urban experience. This panel at Uskudar Metro Station reflects a balanced relationship between traditional production techniques and contemporary urban aesthetics.

“When approaching Iznik tile applications in public spaces, the relationship the surface establishes with the architecture and the way it engages with users are the most decisive elements. The Uskudar Metro Station panel is a cohesive surface work produced with this balance in mind.”
— Iznik Mavi Cini, Senior Architectural Projects Production Facility Manager
Where is the Iznik tile panel located within Uskudar Metro Station?
The Iznik tile panel is located in a public-use area of Uskudar Metro Station, positioned on a surface with heavy passenger circulation. This location allows the panel to be continuously experienced as part of everyday urban life.

Why was the miniature style chosen for this project?
The miniature style creates an immersive experience by drawing viewers into the composition through its richness of detail and close relationship with the surface. In a transitional environment such as a metro station, this approach offers a layered visual experience for people in motion.

How was the relationship between the Iznik tile panel and the station architecture conceived?
The panel was not treated as an element added to the architecture afterward, but as an integral component of the station’s surface composition. Extending along a continuous axis, the composition creates a surface language that reinforces spatial continuity.

What effect do Iznik tile applications create in public transportation spaces?
Applications of this kind enrich spatial perception within heavily used public environments and enable cultural production to engage directly with everyday life. At the same time, they are regarded as permanent surfaces that strengthen the identity of transportation structures.
