Istanbul Baglarbasi Metro Station Iznik Tile Panel

Istanbul Baglarbasi Metro Station Iznik Tile Panel

This large-scale Iznik tile panel located at Baglarbasi Metro Station is one of the notable examples of traditional Iznik tile art adapted to modern urban life. Produced as part of a collaborative project with Anikya, the panel was designed using a composition inspired by the elegant floral motifs of Uskudari Ali Celebi, the renowned ornamental artist and flower painter. Situated within a daily transportation environment, this Iznik tile application presents a powerful surface language that brings cultural heritage into dialogue with public space.

This Iznik tile panel, designed for Baglarbasi Metro Station, was approached as one of the rare public surfaces within Istanbul’s dense urban fabric where people can encounter art. Positioned in the transit area of the metro station, the panel aims to transform the passenger’s perception of the space by creating a continuous narrative along an extended surface.

The work is based on the naturalistic floral language of Uskudari Ali Celebi, one of the important representatives of Ottoman-period flower painting. This historical reference was not directly replicated, but reinterpreted within a contemporary surface composition. The floral compositions were developed to create a balanced sense of rhythm and flow in harmony with the station’s modern architecture.

The production approach, rooted in the Iznik tile tradition, was applied with the long-term requirements of public use in mind. Although the panel is located in a high-traffic environment such as a metro station, it presents a calm and timeless character while preserving its aesthetic unity.

“When producing art for public spaces, the most important issue is for the work to be both harmonious with the architecture and remain perceptible within the pace of everyday life.”
