Suleyman the Magnificent’s daughter Mihrimah Sultan commissioned Mimar Sinan to build Rüstem Paşa Mosque for her husband Rüstem Pasha. The mosque is covered completely by tiles down to the skirts of the dome.

As a part of the restoration project in 2020, a total of 133 Iznik tiles were produced in line with their original format and were placed on the outer wall of the mosque.
